Hamlet

Rapture, one of Scotland’s most exciting theatre companies, will be presenting a special Celtic take on this legendary play. Rapture’s production will combine Shakespeare’s text with a modern, accessible, interpretation on this powerful classic, setting the drama in the contemporary Glasgow underworld.

Some of Scotland’s leading performers bring this dazzling play to life.  Hamlet is caught between the idealistic world of his university and the world of terror and death that his criminal family represent. When his father dies and his ghost confronts him, Hamlet has to choose between family lies and world truths, the past and the future, life and death.

This production, directed by Michael Emans and designed by Lyn McAndrew, combine modern music, innovative iconography and faithfulness to this great play making Rapture’s production an unmissable event.

BBC Young Composers’ Competition

Young musicians aged 12-18 are invited to enter the BBC Proms Young Composers’ Competition. The BBC is looking for original pieces of music, no more than five minutes long.  There are no restrictions on the style of music you can enter; the only condition is that it has to be written down, as someone else will perform it if you reach the final. Winners will receive a BBC commission and see their work performed by professional musicians.

The BBC is also seeking young composers to participate in their 'Composer Labs', which aim to give young talent across the United Kingdom the opportunity to explore new ways of composing and get a taste of what it could mean to be a composer in the 21st century. The Scottish section of the 'Composer Labs' will be in Glasgow sometime between 7 February and 11 April.  And, for the first time, an online version of a Composer Lab will also be made available from April.

The closing date for applications is 28 May 2010

Radical Nature

Art and Architecture for a Changing Planet 1969-2009

RadicalHans Haacke, Monument to Beach Pollution, 1970 Garbage, Carboneras, Spain, Colour photograph 51 x 76cm

Radical Nature is a major new exhibition curated by Francesco Manacorda and launched in London at the Barbican Art Gallery during June - October 2009. The exhibition explores the role of the environment in art and architecture and is the first major exhibition to trace the post war history of artists’ engagement with ecology and environmentalism. Radical Nature includes artists and architects working at an international level and from across the world. The exhibition at The Dick, the Baird and Doon Valley Museum will be the first venue on the world tour and will be the only venue in Scotland.

In addition to large-scale sculptures which will fill the galleries, the exhibition also includes photographs, artist film and original drawings. There will be live planting in each section of the exhibition, turning each venue into an alternative space which allows us to think about the decisions we face now and for our future, and creates a dramatic and unusual visual experience.
