Ayr Town Hall

The Organist Entertains

The Fort, Seafield and Wallacetoun Community Council have arranged another season of Monday lunchtime organ concerts at Ayr Town Hall. Over the coming weeks a variety of organists will present programmes of popular and classical music on the Lewis Pipe Organ.

The organ is an original Victorian pipe organ that was built by Messrs Lewis and Company Limited in 1903. The organ, now fully restored, is of very high quality and admirably suited to the outstanding acoustics within the hall.

This year the concerts will start at midday and should last about 60 minutes.

Conference: Representing Ayrshire

John Galt and his successors

John Galt called his novels set in the west of Scotland 'theoretical histories'. His native Ayrshire was a place of geographical contrasts, and it had been affected by the major historical movements of modern Scotland, from the Reformation to post-industrialism. It lends itself, therefore, to the novel which most characteristically has rich social and historical settings, theoretical and otherwise.

It is no surprise, then, that Ayrshire has proved a fruitful setting for a wide variety of popular and literary novelists born there, on whom Galt's example was often an enduring influence, or for those others who have used it as a backdrop for realism or romance. What is surprising, perhaps, is that this conference is the first one devoted to those novelists who represented Ayrshire.

The conference will be an examination of the novel in Ayrshire in its historical contexts, mindful that Scottish Literature is now a compulsory element in the English Higher and National 5 Examinations. Beginning with Galt, it will come right up to date, to writers such as William McIlvanney, Janice Galloway and Andrew O'Hagan.

Ayrshire Federation of Historical Societies' conference this year is being held jointly with the Association for Scottish Literary Studies and with the support of the University of the West of Scotland.

Drama at the Gaiety Theatre

The Reduced Shakespeare Company:  The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

All 37 Plays in 97 Minutes!

An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays, ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)’ was London’s longest-running comedy having clocked a very palpable nine years in London’s West End at the Criterion Theatre. Now revised for 2013 with the same recycled jokes – just put in a different order.

Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies in one wild ride.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company is a three-man comedy troupe that takes long, serious subjects and reduces them to short, sharp comedies. Since 1981, ‘The Bad Boys of Abridgement’ have created eight stage shows, two television specials, several failed TV pilots and numerous radio pieces – all of which have been performed, seen, heard and translated into Klingon the world over.

The company’s first three shows, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged) and The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) enjoyed a nine-year run at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus. Not only were they London’s longest-running comedies, but at one point the Reduced Shakespeare Company had more shows running in the West End than Andrew Lloyd Webber. Some of them were funnier too.

Written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield. Directed by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor.
