Members of the Perth Visual Arts Forum participated
in a meeting in Dundee on 13th July to discuss a Scottish Artist
Union proposal for small scale loans to artists.
Chris Biddlecombe of the Scottish Artist Union, outlined the proposal in
a brief note in the Forum Newsletter: We are conducting a study assessing
the feasibility of establishing a not-for-profit fund providing low interest
loans of between £100 and £5000 to artists, creative micro enterprises
(5 people or less) and sole-traders in Scotland.
This research project was initiated through Shetland Arts, who brought
the SAU on board along with other key arts individuals to discuss the potential
of developing a new arts financial model that could provide appropriate
banking facilities for artist individuals and small arts organisations
(visual, musicians, performers, writers, etc).
A steering group has been
set up involving Shetland Arts, SAU, SAC and MMM to lead this study – who
have recently employed BOP consultants to carry out the first investigations
in the sector.
There are three workshops (Inverness, Dundee and Glasgow)
with a number of key arts individuals to discuss what and if a model can
be set up – I must stress that this study is not to replace existing funding,
but to look at additional financial support systems and training that can
help the arts sector.
When details of the Glasgow Meeting are available, they will be published on this website.
The Contemporary Art Society, with Southampton
City Art Gallery, are inviting proposals from curating and museum studies
graduates from across the UK who graduated between 2008 - 2011. "Starting
Point" will offer two curators the opportunity to
select a small cluster of works from the collection to be installed as
part of Southampton City Art Gallery's public programme in 2011.
Arguably one of the most outstanding English collections of modern and
contemporary art outside of London, Southampton City Art Gallery have generously
offered their support in providing access to the collection for. As
a way of responding we are asking that proposals take the collection of
artist's film at Southampton as an initial Starting
Point.
As part of their Future Plan Contemporary Art Society are exploring
how they might use
new curatorial strategies to ignite the inspirational potential of public
collections of modern and contemporary art? With this objective,
the Society are organising a National Network Seminar at
Southampton City Art Gallery on 8th November 2010.
The two selected Starting Point curators will be invited to participate
in the seminar which is an opportunity to understand more about public
collections. Speakers will look into the future for the public collections
that they are working with. Future Plan is aimed to inspire
a new generation of emerging curators and arts professionals to think
about how they can work with the extraordinary resource that public collections
offer.
The seminar has been programmed by the Contemporary Art Society’s
Curatorial Fellow, Robert Dingle in collaboration with Southampton City
Art Galleries Lead Exhibitions Officer, Alice Workman. Speakers
will include
Stuart Comer – Curator (Film), Tate Gallery,
Ann Bukantas - Curator of Fine Art, Walker Art Gallery,
Gavin Delahunty - Curator, MIMA and the
Starting Point Curators The seminar will be free to members
of the CAS National Network, £5 to non-members. To reserve a place
