Working with Vulnerable Groups

A revised "Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme" will be introduced by the Scottish Government on 28th February 2011.

The new scheme will replaces the existing arrangement, whereby anybody working with children is advised to undergo a disclosure check for each new position.  PVG will, in the long-run, be quicker and cheaper, and dispense with the need for multiple disclosure checks.  It will also cover what is being termed 'protected adults' as well as children.

For the first year after implementation, the Scheme will only be open to new people joining the children and/or protected adult workforce/volunteering. Thereafter, all those working or volunteering in this area will be able to join.

Joining the scheme will be free for volunteers in the voluntary sector via the CRBS (Central Registered Body for Scotland).

A new telephone help line has been established for anybody with questions about the PVG Scheme.  This can be reached by calling 0870 609 6006.  email inquiries can be directed to pvg.enquiries@scotland.gsi.gov.uk.

Voluntary Arts Scotland hopes to produce a briefing on the new PVG Scheme.

Check to Protect

If you work or volunteer with children, provide health or care services for adults or provide any other services for vulnerable groups in Scotland then the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme will affect you.

The new PVG Scheme, which replaces the current arrangements under Disclosure Scotland, will increase protection for vulnerable groups by preventing people who are known to be unsuitable from working with them.  It will replace the existing disclosure process and be quick and easy for people to use.

The PVG Scheme goes live on 28th February 2011 . Leading up to this the Volunteer Centre East Ayrshire is offering PVG training to voluntary and community groups in January.

This training will provide you with information on who should join the Scheme and when individuals should become Scheme members.
