Scottish Community Foundation Express Grants

Express Grants are for community groups based in Scotland looking for funding of up to £2,000. As the name suggests, Express Grants have a straightforward application process, and a short turnaround time, meaning that within six weeks, applicants will know if they have been successful.

For those familiar with the Scottish Community Foundation's grants programmes, Express Grants replace the Small Grants programme. Small Grants were introduced in 1998 to support small community groups who only needed small amounts to make big differences in their communities. In order to maintain this support, the Foundation has increased the value of Express Grants to £2,000 to reflect the increased cost of living.

Creative Scotland

Creative Scotland has published details of a small number of funding opportunities or, as it likes to style it's activities, an investment update.

'As it develops its new plans, Creative Scotland is experimenting with a range of new methodologies and investment models for identifying and supporting talent.  Where practical we will communicate specific changes in advance, but this may not always be possible. However, we are always prepared to answer any questions and queries that arise as a result of decisions we make.

There are a number of funding opportunities which in the past have been available either as open opportunities or through a range of other processes.  These have been consolidated into new strands of investment, which will be announced during the coming months.

Ultimately, established funding opportunities may not exist at all in the future in their current form, but be incorporated or modified into new, more streamlined and light-touch opportunities.  An example of this is the Performing Arts Programming Fund, which, for the final time, will be available through a different process.  If you have applied to this fund in the past then you will hear from us separately and in more detail about how to engage with us on this.

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland Surgery Tour 2011

As part of its ongoing commitment to investing in the Scottish community, Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland holds a series of surgeries for local charities. The surgery is an opportunity for you to have a one-to-one session with one of their Assessors, and to discuss how to go about putting in an application to the Foundation.

You don’t need to go to a funding surgery – it’s not something they take into account when they assess your application – but generally people who have been to a surgery complete better applications and so are more likely to receive an award.

25th July 2011: Glasgow

BBC Performing Arts Fund - Young People's Musical Theatre scheme

The BBC Performing Arts Fund launched the Young People's Musical Theatre scheme on 27th September.

This is a new scheme that will award £200,000 in grants aimed at encouraging young people to take part in musical theatre. The scheme will be open to any non-profit theatre group who have a youth section or are made up of members under 25. The group should regularly put on musical theatre productions or wish to try out a musical for the first time.

Groups can apply for grants for training and development and in particular for projects that encourage new members and/or new audiences. They may wish to try more ambitious repertoire, work with other local groups or schools or put on workshops with professionals.

Some groups may wish to put on a musical for the first time and could apply for funding to help them hire a live band, a director or a choreographer.

Partners on the scheme include: NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association), Voluntary Arts and The Media Trust.

BBC Performing Arts Fund - Training in Musical Theatre - 2011

Since 2007 the Training in Musical Theatre Fund has already helped over 160 talented students to complete their musical theatre training, distributing awards in excess of £630,000. In 2011 the BBC’s Performing Arts Fund will be contributing up to £150,000 more to that running total as it launches its Training in Musical Theatre scheme for the fifth consecutive year.

To make the process of distributing the grants more streamlined and cost effective, this year they will award the money directly to UK colleges and drama schools.  The colleges will then distribute this funding to talented students who are able to demonstrate that they would benefit most from the financial support.

Applications for the scheme will open on 11th April and will close at 5pm on 3rd May.  So if you’re a current student, or are awaiting a place, on a musical theatre course and are looking for funding, please let your college know about the opportunity and encourage them to apply.
