Architectural Details

Imposing French Renaissance ashlar façe of four storeys, disfigured by modern cinema tat at ground floor level. The three central bays at first floor level have large round-arched windows and, high above, under the projecting cornice, three square headed windows, now bricked up, are subdivided by small attached columns on brackets. The flanking bays, containing staircases, have lunette windows in the upper storey, framed between elongated composite pilasters. The composition is capped by polygonal turrets with steeply pitched roofs. The 1930s interior was destroyed by fire in 1975. The cinema closed in 1999 following the opening of an Odeon multiplex nearby. There were plans to convert the building to retail and restaurant use with a smaller cinema on the second floor.
