In 1991, the Maclaurin Trust invited the Berlin artist Katherina Beitl-Engel to prepare an exhibition of works in gouache and pastel inspired by Robert Burns poetry. One of the works from the exhibition was purchased by Kyle and Carrick District Council. The gallery commissioned the artist's partner, Wolfgang Engel, to prepare a version of a Man 's a Man for performance at the exhibition preview. This music was performed in Rozelle House, Ayr, by the Flaxton Ensemble with Bernadette Donnelly (mezzo soprano) and Wolfgang Engel (contrabass). Herr Engel was a member of the Deutsche Oper Orchestra and the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. There were subsequent performances of the work in Berlin with soloists from the Deutsche Oper.
