Story Telling Rosie Mapplebeck

Rosie in the woods

I tell stories that fill my heart.

As much of my life has revolved around the plant and animal kingdoms, my stories are deeply rooted in the Earth.

My story repertoire includes tales from the Scottish travellers, tales from the celtic lands and stories I have created myself, inspired by animals and birds I have met. I particularly like tales of growth through adversity. I accompany my stories with songs from the Gaelic and Scots ballad traditions.

I tell to all ages, believing we can all relate to a story and we hear all too few.

I have worked from pre-school children, through to adults and special needs folk.

Story may be for fun or it may be a medicine needed for recovery from trauma. In allowing the story to create a safe distance, issues can be re-examined from different perspectives. The use of animal characters enhances this process.

I have worked for many years as a visitor in schools with my animal friends and my bees, and I enjoy bringing the children into contact with the natural world. I am currently writing picture book stories for children about owls.

Ice Light

Ice light, barely a breath,
Frozen pause for reflection,
A slippery stillness,
Moment before the storm.

Rhododendron leaves hang limp
As dead crows strung out for warning.
Blackened and raw, they cling in clusters,
Deeply wracked by the searing cold.

Hoar frost traces over
Every bud, every catkin
And spins the hazel bushes into
Crisply burred brightness.

Ice grips our world in a fierce hold.
It seals the green leaves away from the birds
Who look numbly at white-swagged boughs
And a floor crusted from their reach.

In last nights full moon
We huddled close to a sacred fire;
Into the tearing flame of cedar wood
We cast our intentions to the Cosmos.

Fears consumed by orange tongues,
Hopes curling through smoke trails,
Prayers offered to infinity
In the still of ice light.

Mermaid

Ah'm gunnae be a mermaid.
Ae day, ah kid ye not, ah'll be
Settin up at they rocks, pivotin theer, fu' o' joy an eligince.
An a’ they sailor boys, hey, they're gonna fin me jest sumthin,
Pit doon ther trawlin geer an tak tae the waves,
To draw me tae thirselves;
Tae try an keep me hoo they remimbir
That wimmin fowk shud really be:
Wild an fu' o' the singin;
Keenin tae the air; blawin tae the sea.
Nae claethes tae encumber me, jist
The tangle an' sum perls
An' a wee crabbies' cleuk fer a hair clasp.
Then, ah'll slip atween the waves, an leave them
Stranded on the rocky shore,
While I haul oot fer deeper, truer watters.
